Why Collections?
I chose Collections as my project because I saw an opportunity to use my ideas to change the meaning of daily objects around me.I wanted to explore the idea of 'dead matter' in still life.Dead matter is shown
IDEAS/MINDMAP:Lighting,vibrant colours, shapes, using objects to create a shape, making structures out of everyday objects, edges, still life, 'dead matter'

My photographs
These are my photographs that are inspired by Olivia Parker. They are still life photos and I used different backgrounds, shapes ,objects and lighting.I also edited the pictures to create an abstract element and bring a bit more life and colour into . My favourite picture is the second one, I used mugs and pencils to create a pattern of some sort.I placed them next to add a another layer of pattern . My second picture uses mugs and pencils to create something that looks like a building.I left the edges open at the bottom open just like Olivia Parker did in her photographs. This suggests that the structure can be tall.
Instead of using black and white I wanted to approach the project in my own way by using vibrant colours. This draws attention to more than just the detail of the objects which is opposite to the black and white photographs of Olivia Parker.Just like her i used objects that are "dead" but are tightly connected to life. Plectrums in the first photograph I use for playing my guitar, cups, pencils and mugs I use on a daily basis. There are shoe boxes for shoes that I wear very day and Lego figures I play with my brother. All of that is challenging and explores what is still life genre about. Is the "dead matter" really dead after all ?

Olivia Parker research
Olivia Parker was born in the United States, and gained a degree in Art History. She started her career as a painter and later became a self taught photographer. Her work is inspired by still life painted by 17th century artists.Olivia Parker was exploring the idea of "dead matter" by choosing objects that are connected to life. The photographer doesn't allow the viewers eyes to focus on one point because the edges of her photographs are open.

YEAR 10 ASSESSMENT
1. In the black and white picture A Summer Afternoon by Olivia Parker i can see cut flowers arranged in a row on a background full of shadows, its hard to distinguish one vocal point is the photograph. When I look at it my eyes travel all around the frame and beyond because the edges of the photograph are open.Thew mood of this photo is hard to capture because there are so many things that are happening, this creates sense of confusion for me.There is a big contrast between some parts of the photographs.
Still life genre usually involves ordinary objects, which are usually simple and boring. This is not the case with Olivia Parkers photograph and that makes it unexpected for the still life genre. The objects in the photographs are very unusual and the scale of the objects is distorted
2. It appears that the strong, natural light comes from a window behind the camera. There are objects next to the window which are creating shadows on the white surface that seems to be a wall. This creates a background for the row of flowers.
If I was to recreate this photograph I would use stickers and stick them on the window to create a background for larger objects which would be on the wall.Olivia Parker does not use any colour in her photo, however if i were to recreate a similar pice I would use bright vibrant colours.
3. A Summer Afternoon by Olivia Parker is not a easy picture to process for me.I find it chaotic and confusing, however I also get a sense of adventure and excitement. The human figure, plane reminds me of toys I used to play as a child. If i were to describe the mood of the photograph i would say its optimistic and reminds me of a park in the afternoon. It's interesting because its a still life photo but it really gives the impression of movement.I think its due to the placement of objects and shadows.
If i were to ask Olivia Parker 3 questions about her photograph.
1.Do the objects on the picture symbolise anything in particular?
2.Did you have any inspiration for the photograph?
3.Why did you choose black and white instead of colours?
4. The research of Olivia Parker helped me to understand her work in much more depth, I can see she uses mixture of light, objects and shadows to create a digital collage.
I learned about her interest in history of knowledge and science as well as her general curiosity about the world.
There is a quote is the video that accurately summarises OliviaParkers: "She has collected the world around her and then used it as a raw material for her art"
A Summer Afternoon relates to the theme of Collections because it uses different objects to create an image that can be read in many different ways. For me this image is like a collection of meanings, every time I look at it I can see new things.
